It gives rise to words like mystikos, meaning “secret,” and mystēs, referring to “one initiated” into hidden rites. Throughout history, this concept has evolved.

From the secretive Eleusinian Mysteries of ancient Greece to its adoption by early Christians, who transformed it from forbidden pagan rites into a symbol of the “hidden” meanings of sacraments and a direct connection with God, the term has taken on various forms. By the 17th century, a mystic was someone who preached mystical theology, and today it refers to anyone seeking an ineffable union with the divine through practices of silence, surrender, and inner vision.

There is a missing piece to this history. On the mystic’s path, people rarely speak of a particular story: the heavy emotions and the weight of experience. In the public eye, it shines with light and revelation: quiet dawns, sudden heart-openings, and moments when the veil thins, revealing clarity in all things. In that instant, a vision unfolds of endless possibilities for a world filled with peace. Yet that image is only an invitation.

When viewed through the mystic’s lens, the true potential of a human being becomes clear. Yet, the most profound insights often come from personal experience. Each shift in your frequency aligns you with this heightened perspective.

To the casual observer, it’s all too easy to scroll past the quotes, the early morning images of lotus poses, and the proclamations of everlasting peace. You might briefly feel skepticism or even irritation, yet something deeper nudges you to pause and engage. For just a moment, the world can seem to sparkle with understanding, offering a glimmer of hope for genuine connection.

For the mystic, the focus extends far beyond surface-level concerns like words, armor, or a meticulously crafted narrative. They delve into the soul beneath, discovering a raw potential that hums within: a light akin to an ember, yet overshadowed by the chains of past burdens. In this depth lies the possibility for unconditional love and reclamation, or conversely, the path to destruction and endless self-betrayal. It’s as if their essence speaks a language that predates words, and suddenly you find yourself understanding it instinctively, connecting with their vulnerability on a deep level. You know this vulnerability because you live it.

This new perspective often begins right after you catch your first glimpse of the divine. Though that moment may pass, its impact lingers deep within you. When you return to everyday life, you realize you are not the same as before. Your eyes adjust, and suddenly, the way you perceive your partner, your child, your friend, or even a stranger on the street is forever changed. The barrier between souls seems to fade, and a gentle awareness begins to blossom within your heart.

At first, it feels like a precious gift, and a wave of compassion washes over you as you begin to see the pain not as drama but as a sacred wound. You recognize their hidden brilliance before they do, and you ache for the potential within them, longing for it to emerge.

There is nothing cute about a mystic’s shadow; it is not a shortcoming but a heavy, sacred terrain many walk in silence. Interactions and conversations no longer hold the same substance. You are never the same after shedding those layers, as each of your petals unfolds.

Dearest reader,

I’ve been sitting here trying to find the right words to tell you how much you mean to me, and for those of you who are new here and have only recently joined. Sometimes I overthink these posts, wanting them to feel just right, but the truth is I’m simply in the experience, living it day by day, and what matters most to me are the relationships we build along the way. Lately, one theme keeps showing up in my life: reciprocity. The quiet, beautiful give-and-take that happens when we truly see one another. In a world that’s always rushing toward some unknown “somewhere,” I find myself pausing more often, asking: where are we all hurrying to, exactly?

Just as I was drafting this, something made me stop. For the second day in a row, a bird flew straight into my window. I looked out and saw the poor thing sitting on the ground, stunned and shaken. My heart went out to it immediately. I closed my eyes and sent it healing energy. Moments later, its mate swooped in, landed nearby, watched, stayed close. It didn’t fly away. It just stayed present, caring, connected.

A little while later, I checked again. The stunned bird shook itself, stretched its wings, and flew off. Now, as I finish writing this, I can hear both of them outside, their playful voices singing. What started as a moment of shock transformed into one of resilience and celebration.

Watching that small, tender moment reminded me why relationships feel so sacred. Whether it’s two birds looking out for each other or you and me sharing this journey through these words, every interaction holds a mirror. In each person we meet, in every exchange, big or small, there’s a piece of ourselves reflected. A soul’s journey, I’ve come to believe, is really about remembering who we are through these reflections.

This moment in time brings me to something that feels essential, yet goes unnoticed: the different ways we each handle our inner wounds, our “complexes.” A few recent conversations with friends gave me a gentle nudge from the divine to lean into this topic. It started with me sharing an observation, and what unfolded felt like quiet guidance worth passing along.

I said: “It’s about the differences in how we interact with one another and what we each tend to focus on, the reactions we have to every experience. Men often project their complexes outward onto others, while many women internalize them, which can lead to shutting down emotions.”

My friend responded thoughtfully: “You’re right, it’s a fascinating lens. The contrast in how we experience, process, and respond to the same moments reveals so much about our conditioning and perhaps even our deeper nature. Both are protective responses in their own way, but neither truly heals the complex unless it’s brought into awareness and met with honesty and compassion.”

That exchange stayed with me. While there are patterns that show up differently across masculine and feminine energies (and yes, those differences matter), this isn’t about boxing anyone in by gender. It’s about recognizing the tendencies we all carry, to some degree, and the ways we protect ourselves when something unresolved is triggered.

Projection pushes the pain away; internalization pulls it deeper inside. Both keep us from fully feeling, seeing, and releasing what is necessary to heal. The real medicine, as my friend said, is awareness and compassion first toward ourselves, then toward the person standing before us, who might be mirroring exactly what we need to see. The simplest, most vital part of that medicine is taking the time to listen to one another. The currency of real connection isn’t material; it’s the moments we give a thoughtful reply, a gentle check-in, a quiet presence when someone shares something vulnerable. Those small acts of attention are what weave us together.

I want you to know that while I don’t send longer posts every day, and that’s never been my intention, it doesn’t mean you’re not on my mind. I think of this community often, holding space for each of you as I walk my own path with authenticity and genuine intention. You’ll also notice I share smaller pieces of myself through Notes on Substack, a little at a time, like breadcrumbs of presence. As a Projector in Human Design, my energy does not work for constant outflow; oversharing drains me quickly. So these shorter notes are my way of staying visible and connected without burning out, allowing me to keep showing up for you (and for myself) in a sustainable way. My hope is always to reflect a little more light, to help you see the radiance that’s already inside you, even on the days when it feels dim.

I want to share a recent conversation I had with a fellow Aquarian that took a fun turn. We’d been swapping war stories, and one reel flipped the script. A zodiac savant is breaking down shadow traits with the precision of a stand-up comic. What I realized is that shadow work doesn’t have to be rigid, and when you connect with someone who sees the world through the same cracked lens, the darkness turns into a playground. I couldn’t help but laugh as those words flowed, and sometimes, some situations deserve statements like these. It’s also a healthy reminder that shadow work isn’t complete when you close your journal; it wraps up when our bodies stop bracing for impact.

(We’re using this thread as our collective pressure valve. I want to offer different perspectives on ways to transmute the emotions that come with this deep work. It’s real and no sage required. It’s a way to release tension when our inner demons start making noise.)

I am that fellow Aquarian, and I have to say, I’ve equally enjoyed getting into shadow work through humor. (Thank you, Chris, for sending me the reel and starting that laughter) I’ve found it more healing than going into the depths. And don’t get me wrong, I LOVE being in the depths!

But sometimes, you just need to laugh. That laughter can be enough to heal layers and lifetimes. The creator of the aforementioned reel has become one of my favorite zodiac channels, and I’ve been healing and elevating while looking at my Aquarian shadows with another Divine Feminine Aquarian.

Shadow Work. Blah Blah Blah.

The intentional practice of noticing, naming, and integrating the hidden, rejected, or denied parts of yourself, thoughts, feelings, behaviors, or traits you’ve pushed away because they feel “bad,” “weak,” or “unacceptable,” so they stop running your life.

Depth is where I love going, and it is refreshing to be able to do that with this DFF (Divine Feminine Friend). I used to believe that the darker aspects of myself were villains, and I associated them with shame. After understanding that they are more than that, I discovered that my shadows aren’t evil; they’re “glitchy code” in my internal system. The more I name them, the less they crash the program.

What if the shadows we often see as flaws are actually features? For example, jealousy isn’t a virus; it’s more like an early warning system signaling that you actually care. Or numbness, you’re not “checking out.” You’ve been through too much, and shutting down to stay safe.

When do we stop labeling it as a bug and start paying attention to what your triggers are saying instead?

I’ve also been giggling through the entire process of co-creating this post. Shadow Work 3.0 has become a beacon of light in my life. Who knew Shadow Work could be so fun?

I’ve been known to take myself too seriously. So this has been an invitation to leave that seriousness behind and laugh at myself. We’re not perfect. Not any of us. So, why do we beat ourselves up for our flaws when we can laugh them into the light?

Like Renell, I’m also a very deep person. Living in the depths is my happy place. Shadow Work is something I naturally did my entire life without realizing I was doing it. When I discovered Shadow Work through my spiritual journey, it gave a name to something I’d been told I was wrong for exploring my entire life.

Be happy. Lighten up. Why are you so down?

Well, now I know I was looking at the shadows within myself and within the world. The shadows most people don’t want to look at. I wasn’t sad or mad. I was contemplative. I was curious. I was the quiet observer. And I still am!

The only difference is I’m not apologizing for it anymore.

Am I willing to look at my shadows through a lens of love, and maybe even laughter?

Am I open to seeing my shadow as equal to my light and just as important in shaping who I came here to be?

Tribalism turns neighbors into adversaries, cowardice abandons the vulnerable, and ingratitude sneers at those who extend their hands. These flaws are not anomalies; they are part of us, woven into the very fabric of every heart. The real question isn’t whether these shadows exist, but whether you dare to confront them and choose a better path.

In my previous article, I touched on the Wounded Healer, Chiron, whose narrative of pain turned into wisdom mirrors experiences that leave scars, but can also nourish empathy and inspire us to heal from them. I came across Richard Rudd’s The Myths of Chiron & Pholus. This two-part article deepened my connection to my musings on the Wounded Healer.

In the myth, Pholus, the centaur who guards sacred wines in a hidden cave, uncorks a single jar at Heracles’ request. This moment is marked by the sharp “pop” of the seal giving way, releasing an intoxicating scent of fermented Earth and wild honey that fills the air like forbidden nectar, its sharpness igniting the senses and stirring the blood. The chaos that ensues drives the nearby centaurs to madness, culminating in tragedy, as Pholus himself falls victim to a stray arrow.

This myth illustrates how small catalysts can create significant shifts; a single truth articulated, a boundary drawn, or a hidden shadow brought to light can unleash a wave of change that reshapes everything. In Richard’s article, he explains Pholus symbolizing these pivotal moments, urging us to confront the unchecked forces within.

Rudd ties Pholus to the alchemical process of purification, where the sacred wine symbolizes forces that “kill off certain aspects of our lower nature” to birth unified consciousness. As Rudd notes, “Every element of your own life that you find disturbing is an aspect of your Shadow awaiting your embrace, and in it lies the counterbalance to your higher vision.”

Why do we fear this mirror? We fear it because of the control we believe we must hold onto. I had no control over my experiences when I was younger, so as I became an adult, I subconsciously held onto the pain of it. Change is a vital part of our growth, and when we sense control slipping away, something whispers, “You are weak,” or “Who do you think you are?” Looking at myself in the mirror has helped me understand what drives humanity. The deeper I look into these facets, the clearer it becomes: the clenched fist I once thought was protecting me was really just guarding the wound. However, that wound doesn’t tell the whole story. Beneath it lies a light, untouched by anything that has ever hurt me, a light I was born with. The same light that once flickered in fear now learns to blaze unapologetically. I didn’t need to control everything; I just needed to stop abandoning myself.

Each time I look into my own eyes and refuse to flinch, I reclaim a spark of that light. Every time I label the whispers as the lies they are, another door swings open. I’m not forcing reality to change; I’m reshaping it through remembrance. The world doesn’t bend to my will; it reflects my willingness to embrace it. So, I laid down the armor built from past pain, piece by piece, and I stepped into the darkness not to fight it but to illuminate it from within. And as I rise, the light is no longer a secret I keep; it becomes the signal I send out. What I attract now isn’t just a result of what I survived; it’s a reflection of who I have become: awake, unashamed, and undeniably free.

Humility is key; to me, it’s shown in asking for help, signaling the qualities we crave: connection, guidance, shared transformation over isolation. In a culture worshipping independence, reaching out is revolutionary, inviting others to hold space for our unraveling. There is no finish line to this race; it’s a spiral of discovery, each layer deepening our harmony.

Social and mainstream media often skew our self-perception, breeding anxiety and apathy. Just think about how a single viral post can spark outrage or numbness, revealing unexamined aspects of ourselves. To cultivate a healthy mindset, recognize these influences, acknowledge the shadows within ourselves and others, and approach them not with judgment but with curiosity. Question why circumstances are affecting you or why they may be happening. This skill can be enhanced by understanding archetypes, which helps us confront challenges more clearly and develop resilience.

Pholus reminds us that unaddressed shadows, whether personal or collective, can escalate into chaos, as apathy can spread from one heart to create global divides. However, by looking in the mirror and uncovering the driving forces behind our responses, we can transform chaos into renewal, like a phoenix rising from the ashes.

She was judged and hung on a hook to wither for three days and three nights; yet, she rose again, reborn, carrying the weight of her own darkness now in her open hands.

That is the blueprint.

How does our consciousness evolve from the wounds we carry?

This card struck a chord within me, but just how deep am I meant to go? I feel like I’m wading into the darkest depths, and if I go any further, I might not resurface. I find myself tangled in thoughts, searching for answers. Is the solution to fixing everything that’s broken really that simple? But wait, are things truly broken in the first place? I intended to keep it straightforward and brief, but Spirit had other ideas. I ended up down a rabbit hole and couldn’t resist exploring further. It has been challenging for me to come to terms with. I’ve taken the time to sit with this overwhelming energy and work through all the thoughts and emotions that go with it.

This inquiry draws me to Chiron, the centaur of myth, whose eternal wound gave birth to wisdom; to Carl Jung, whose wounded healer archetype revealed the transformative power of suffering; and to Zane B. Stein, whose astrological insights, following Chiron’s 1977 discovery, wove these threads into the tapestry of our collective psyche. Together, they teach us that our deepest wounds are not just personal; they ripple throughout the Universe, shaping humanity’s soul. As we share these stories, we hold a sacred responsibility to nurture healing, not harm.

Who is Chiron?

In the tales of ancient Greece, Chiron, the centaur born of Cronus and Philyra, stood apart from his wild counterparts. He was not just any half-human, half-horse; he was wise, compassionate, and a skilled healer, having been trained by Apollo and Artemis. However, his story takes a tragic turn when a poisoned arrow accidentally strikes him. Immortal yet unable to die, Chiron finds himself caught in endless suffering. Yet, this pain becomes a source of strength as he dedicates himself to mentoring heroes like Achilles and Asclepius, imparting knowledge of medicine, music, and ethics. Ultimately, in an act of self-sacrifice, he chooses to give up his immortality to free Prometheus. Through this noble deed, Chiron is transformed into the constellation Centaurus, serving as a celestial reminder of how strength can emerge from our suffering.

This enduring myth, passed down through the ages, has woven itself into the fabric of our collective understanding: our wounds serve not as dead ends, but as gateways to deeper understanding. The Greeks shared the story of Chiron in their grand amphitheaters and sacred temples, embedding the belief that embracing suffering can lead to profound wisdom. This archetype has resonated across various cultures, from shamans undertaking intense trials to spiritual leaders who bear the burdens of others. Chiron’s myth encourages us to perceive our wounds as sacred, inspiring storytellers, poets, priests, and philosophers to craft narratives that uplift rather than harm.

The Psyche’s Alchemy

Fast forward to the 20th century, where Carl Jung, the Swiss mystic of the psyche, crystallized Chiron’s essence into the archetype of the wounded healer. In works like Fundamental Questions of Psychotherapy (1951), Jung wrote, “Only the wounded physician heals.” Drawing from his psychological crises, particularly after his 1913 split with Freud, Jung saw that a healer’s wounds enable empathy. A therapist, scarred by their struggles, connects deeply with a patient’s pain, creating a shared space for transformation. Jung’s insight revolutionized psychology, offering the collective a new lens: our wounds are not flaws but portals to understanding.

In the early 20th century, as industrialization and war fractured societies, Jung’s archetype provided people with a framework to process collective trauma, world wars, economic collapse, and existential doubt. His lectures and writings, shared through books and institutions such as the C.G. Jung Institute, seeded the collective psyche with the idea that healing comes from facing, rather than fleeing, pain. Yet, Jung cautioned that healers must know their wounds, so as not to project harm onto others, a reminder for us to share knowledge with care.

I pause to reflect on the idea that the challenges I have faced or will face ultimately turn into wisdom. This notion leads me to understand that a divine force is at work orchestrating everything. As Carl Jung noted, a healer cannot truly heal unless they have walked a similar path themselves.

How can humanity truly achieve its highest potential if it continues to fall into the same patterns? Does this imply that a sacrifice is required? When someone declares, “Enough is enough,” what does that mean?

Astrology’s Cosmic Mirror

In Essence and Application: A View from Chiron (1983), Stein writes that Chiron’s orbit “between the structured world of Saturn and the revolutionary energy of Uranus” mirrors the mythological Chiron’s ability to bridge pain and wisdom, aligning with Jung’s concept of the wounded healer as a symbol of individuation.

When 2060 Chiron was discovered in Aries on November 1, 1977, by Charles Kowal, it sparked a new chapter. Zane B. Stein, an astrologer with a mystic’s heart, saw in this centaur object a reflection of Jung’s archetype and Chiron’s myth. Within weeks, Stein contacted astronomers for Chiron’s ephemeris, founding the Association for the Study of Chiron (ASC) in 1978 to explore its astrological significance. Stein’s work, detailed in Chiron – Healer and Wholemaker (2020), offered the collective a map: Chiron’s placement in a natal chart reveals wounds often experienced in early life, such as rejection or loss, that, when faced, become sources of wisdom. Stein’s ephemeris and lectures, shared globally, empowered astrologers and seekers to explore these wounds, fostering a collective shift toward “wholemaking,” a term he used in conjunction with Jung’s concept of individuation.

The 1977 discovery, amid cultural shifts such as the human potential movement and the rise of personal computing, amplified Chiron’s impact. Stein’s writings, circulated through books and talks, invited the collective to see wounds as transformative, not tragic. Yet, he too emphasized the responsibility of astrologers: they must interpret Chiron’s transits with care, as their words shape how individuals and societies process pain. Its transits, such as the 2018–2019 return to Aries, kindle collective reckonings around identity and courage. This transition sparked a profound personal transformation within me and ignited a deep-seated craving for growth.

The Wound of My Voice

I’ve always felt a quiet ache when it comes to sharing my thoughts. With Chiron, the wounded healer, in my third house in Taurus, my deepest wound lies in communication, feeling like my words aren’t enough, like they don’t carry the weight or worth I long for them to have. Growing up, I often felt unheard or doubted that my ideas were valuable. There’s a slowness to how I express myself, a need for my words to feel solid, grounded, and honest, which sometimes makes me hesitate or hold back.

This wound has taught me that my voice matters, even when it feels small or unsteady. It’s shown me the power of speaking authentically, of sharing my truth in a way that’s true to my pace and values. For me, healing means embracing the beauty of my deliberate, thoughtful words and trusting they have a place in the world. I was treated so differently because of who I am, and I grappled with feeling things so intensely and caring deeply for others. I recognized that there’s an alternative way of being human.

The Greatest Wound Of All

We are a species bleeding from wounds we refuse to see, passing our pain like a poisoned heirloom through generations. The wounded healer, both archetype and curse, resides within us all and embodies the dual nature of being broken and yearning to mend; yet, we sabotage ourselves, perpetuating the same agony. Why? Because we bypass the truth. We dress our wounds in denial, call it resilience, and march on, oblivious to the rot spreading beneath.

Humanity, as a collective, is stuck in this loop, and it’s not because we’re inherently flawed. We’ve built systems, lineages, cultures, and beliefs perpetuating the cycle, and we’re too young, too divided, to break it. Look at our lineages. Pain isn’t just personal; it’s ancestral. Trauma seeps through bloodlines like ink through water. Our forebears’ fears, shames, and unspoken grief don’t vanish; they lodge in our bones, habits, and silences. A mother’s unhealed rage becomes her daughter’s anxiety. A father’s suppressed shame shapes his son’s violence.

We inherit these wounds not as metaphors but as living ghosts, dictating how we love, fight, or crumble. And we, in turn, pass them to our children, not because we want to, but because we don’t know how to stop. We raise them in the shadow of our unexamined scars, teaching them to carry the same burdens. Every generation swears it’ll be different, but the cycle churns on because facing the wound means facing ourselves, and we’d rather look away.

Why does this persist?

First, we’re infants in the grand scheme. Humanity is a toddler civilization, barely out of its cradle. A few thousand years of recorded history are insignificant compared to the vastness of time. We’re still learning to walk and wield the fire of consciousness without burning ourselves. Our tools, philosophy, science, and spirituality are crude, half-formed. We think we’re advanced, but we’re just monkeys with smartphones, pretending we’ve outgrown our primal fears. Our youth makes us reckless; we lack the wisdom to heal. We’re too busy surviving to reflect, too green to see the long arc of our mistakes.

Second, we’ve fractured ourselves along lines of masculine and feminine. It was never about men versus women; it’s about the energies we all carry, the yin and yang of existence, torn apart by fear. In its drive for control, order, and dominance, the masculine grew terrified of the feminine’s chaos, intuition, and depth. The feminine holds mysteries of creation, emotion, and the unseen, which the masculine has yet to grasp and seeks to suppress.

It wasn’t just patriarchy; it was a deeper schism, a rejection of half our humanity. The masculine built walls, religions, hierarchies, and dogmas to tame what it didn’t understand, and in doing so, it wounded both itself and the feminine. The feminine, in turn, internalized that rejection, giving birth to shame and silence. This divide festers, a collective wound that keeps us from wholeness. We can’t heal as a species at war with nature.

What if it is a design to collect these experiences for the greater good?

What matters is this: we’re not doomed, but we’re not innocent either. The wounded healer carries the weight of a silent truth, yearning to speak but fearing their voice falls short, yet healing lies in embracing the slow, steady courage to share their authentic words. We cannot escape the pain through distractions, endless wars, mindless consumption, and superficial fixes because the alternative is too intense. To break the cycle, we’d have to stop, look at the blood on our hands, and ask:

What have we done?

What are we still doing?

But that takes courage we haven’t yet found.

So we stumble on, young and divided, passing our wounds like torches in the dark—the wounded healer weeps, not for our pain, but for our refusal to face it. Until we do, the loop will hold us in place.

The Collective’s Evolution

Through the ages, Chiron’s myth, Jung’s archetype, and Stein’s astrology have woven a thread through the collective psyche: our wounds are teachers, but only if we engage them consciously. From ancient Greece to modern day, these stories have shaped our understanding of suffering and healing. The Greeks shared Chiron’s tale to inspire resilience; Jung offered a psychological framework to navigate 20th-century turmoil; and Stein gave us tools to map our wounds in the stars—each era’s contribution built on the last, evolving our consciousness toward greater self-awareness and empathy.

Yet, as I reflect on this cosmic tapestry, I see a sacred duty in the stories we share, whether myths, theories, or horoscopes, that imprint the collective psyche. As we consume and share information, we must ask: Does this heal or harm? Our consciousness evolves when we honor our wounds with truth and compassion, offering the collective a mirror that reflects light through our shadows. As I hold this torch of the wounded healer, I ask you: What wound in your soul can you transform into wisdom for the collective?

You derive confidence from being alone because, when you are alone, you are in control of the immediate world around you. But the point of accruing wisdom in solitude is to then have the confidence to express that wisdom to others when you rejoin the pack and discuss the fruits of your sacrifice. When you speak this into being by confessing it, you manifest it as a byproduct which, in turn, clears up any confusion you have attached to deciding how best to proceed - the universe will show you the pathway forward.

So don’t be scared to say it out loud - this is how you will get what you want, how what you’ve been dreaming about will come into being and come into balance in the material. You are speaking into existence a timeline in which this can occur. This weightlessness that you feel from unburdening your soul draws true love to you, along with happiness, harmony, and a deep sense of fulfillment.
